Emily Fassler provides dental care to Dylan Steht-Johnson, 9, of Carbondale during the eighth annual Give Kids a Smile Day. Fassler, a junior from Sterling, was among 115 dental hygiene students participating in the community outreach event from the Dental Hygiene Program in the School of Allied Health. The SIUC Community Dental Center in the College of Applied Sciences and Arts was a busy place, with 240 children getting free dental care courtesy of the dental hygiene students and 16 faculty members, as well as three hygienists and 11 dentists from the community who volunteered their services. Give Kids a Smile offers children from all over the region the opportunity to get free dental examinations, X-rays, cleanings, fluoride treatments, sealants and, if required, other minor dental work.
